Wiesn: Oktoberfest in Munich in August? Aiwanger doesn’t give up
Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Aiwanger, has one of his ideas for an earlier Oktoberfest in Munich – and above all receives doubts and criticism.
Hubert Aiwanger does not give up. True, his suggestion is that Oktoberfest to bring forward in the summer, in Munich predominantly received with skepticism or rejection. But for the Minister of Economic Affairs and head of the Free Voters, it’s not just about the Oktoberfest. “We should concentrate our festivals this year more in the summer on Friday,” said Aiwanger in an interview with our editorial team.
In his opinion, the advantages are obvious. On the one hand, according to Aiwanger, there is more planning security for the organizers. Like it will be in the coming autumn corona continues, is hardly calculable. In the summer, on the other hand, like last year, the risk of infection is lower.
On the other hand, large and small festivals from May to September could kill several birds with one stone: showmen and restaurateurs could at least partially compensate for the failure of the Christmas business, the inner cities could be livened up and the trade could, for example, by a parallel extension of the Benefit from opening times. “That would be a solution for everyone,” said Aiwanger – and in any case better than having to “blow everything off” again in the fall.
Aiwanger at Oktoberfest in summer: “Better than no Oktoberfest at all”
Aiwanger is sticking to his idea of having the Oktoberfest take place in summer. A Oktoberfest in August, so his consideration, is always better than no Oktoberfest at all. It could even be extended by a week, if he had his way. This would ease the rush and the popular folk festival could also become more “cozy” again.
The enthusiasm for this proposal is limited in the city of Munich. Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) and economic advisor Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) promised to examine the idea. Baumgärtner made no secret of his skepticism: “For me personally, an Oktoberfest in July is hardly conceivable. And in August are in Bavaria the summer holidays. ”Whether a safe Oktoberfest with 2G rules can take place in autumn should be decided by April or May.

Bavaria’s Hotel and Restaurant President Angela Inselkammer resolutely opposes the idea of bringing the Oktoberfest forward. “I refuse and hope that we can get it under control differently,” Inselkammer told ours, adding: “The Oktoberfest is a traditional event. And such events shouldn’t be shaken. If you unhinge everything, you give the pandemic too much space. ”Therefore Inselkammer appeals:“ Leave the Oktoberfest as it is. The Oktoberfest has to remain the Oktoberfest. “
