The 245th anniversary of the sacred vow to San Ranieri is celebrated at the Chiesa della Spina
Pisa, 7 January 2022 – Saturday 8 January, at the church of Santa Maria della Spina the appointment will be repeated for the dissolution of the old vow made in San Ranieri by the Pisans on the occasion of the “terrible” flood of Arno on January 2, 1777: to thank the Patron, to whom a prayer of protection had been addressed, for having spared the city from death and destruction, the Pisan citizens, together with the rulers, promised to celebrate in I perpetuate a votive mass every year. For many years Pisa dissolved that vow (the ceremony took place in the church of San Vito where Ranieri died), then everything was interrupted until 2012 when, on the initiative of the Compagnia di San Ranieri, the Feast of the Sacred Vow (this is the name of the anniversary) has been restored, celebrating Holy Mass every year in a different church in the city, with the devout participation of the citizens and the homage to the Saint of the Municipal Administration.
ANNIVERSARY – Even this year, 245th Anniversary of the Vow, the Compagnia di San Ranieri organizes the Holy Mass celebrated by Archbishop Giovanni Paolo Benotto in the small church of Santa Maria della Spina, whose access, given the Covid 19 emergency, will be limited to a small number of people.
LIVE – The celebrations, broadcast in live broadcast from Telegranducato on channel 14 DGT, will take place on Saturday 8 January 2022 according to an articulated program: at 10.15 am influx of the Authority, guests and guests; at 10.30 report by Prof. Sergio Pinna, professor of Geography and Climate History at the University of Pisa, on “The flood of the Arno in 1966”; at 11.00 the Holy Mass celebrated by the Archbishop during which the Municipal Administration will pay homage to San Ranieri, prayer and blessing for the City. Some students of the “Giosuè Carducci” Music School of Pisa will animate the liturgical service, prepared by Professor Marialuisa Pepi and accompanied on the organ by Michele Malvaldi. During the celebration offerings will be collected for the Citadel of Solidarity of San Ranieri. On the occasion of the extraordinary opening of the church, courtesy of the Palazzo Blu Foundation, some photos from the Frassi Archive relating to the terrible days of the 1966 flood will be exhibited.
