Portugal teamed up to help Leonor, a child suffering from a rare cancer
She is 10 years old and is in Barcelona where she has been operated on. Fighting April disease and needing donations to do more treatments.
In less than a day, the number of MB Way that collected donations reached the daily limit. A good sign for the fight that 10-year-old Leonor will have ahead.
A child is the daughter of Bruno Santos, Bombeiro Sapador de Lisboa, who includes the unwanted and surprising diagnosis in April 2021. A small pain in Leonor’s leg turned out to be more severe than previously thought.
The diagnosis turned out to be a sarcoma, a type of cancer commonly found in the bones and soft parts of the body. Since then, a family has had the support of those closest to it to keep fighting for a cure. Unfortunately, “in Portugal all possibilities were exhausted”, and Leonor even had to travel to Spain.
She is currently hospitalized at the Hospital San Joan de Déu, in Barcelona, specializing in pediatric oncology, where she seeks to find a treatment that is more effective in eliminating the disease. The treatment, carried out without any help from the State, needs donations – and the campaign launched on social networks this Thursday, January 7th, it is already starting to produce results.
“We ask for any donation, from those who can do it, to help Bruno and his family not to give up”, can be read on the page of Help Eleanor. While the family is in Spain, it is Bruno’s fellow firefighters who are trying to streamline a campaign, making it reach more and more people.
“Leonor is currently recovering in intensive care after having been operated on in the operating room, in a surgery that pretended to ‘freeze’ the sarcoma”, reveals the official account of the initiative. “The treatments and the stay are expensive. The donations will serve so that the parents do not need to say that they ‘can’t fight anymore’ for Leonor’s life. ”
For now, the goal of the campaign is not yet defined, with the last treatment having a cost of 40 thousand euros. In the coming days, there will be a meeting with doctors to outline the path to follow and, eventually, the amount needed to move forward with new treatments.
