Health – Munich – Streeck: “That will be a gradual transition” – Bavaria
Berlin (dpa) – The Bonn scientist Hendrik Streeck predicts a step-by-step way out of the pandemic corona situation. “That will be a gradual transition,” said Streeck on Thursday evening in the ZDF program “Markus Lanz”. There won’t be one day of virus relief. Streeck predicted a drop in the number of infections in spring. “Then the hard work begins,” emphasized the virologist.
The health system must be made crisis-proof and the vaccination campaign continued. Then there may be an adapted vaccine. Streeck describes the debate about compulsory vaccination as “a little out of place”. He justified this, among other things, with the fact that current vaccines with the Omikron variant only offer brief protection against infection.
Omikron is probably more transferable to studies, but there are no longer as many severe courses, said Streeck. The variant also no longer penetrates the lungs as well, but primarily affects the upper respiratory tract. But one will have to reckon with an “enormous wave” of infections, even in people who have been vaccinated twice. Streeck therefore campaigned for booster vaccinations.
