2021 Daily Faceoff Top 10: # 1 – NHL Draft prospect Logan Mailloux faces uncertain future after criminal charges in Sweden
And so there was one.
After a week of summarizing the most read articles on the Daily Faceoff, we have landed on number one: an article by Frank Seravalli that digs deep into the accusations against the Logan Mailloux prospect.
Seravalli wrote that several teams took Mailloux, who was hailed as a middle class, first-round talent, directly from his draft list. Weeks after the article was broken, the Montreal Canadiens shocked the hockey world by using their first-round pick on the back cover.
Here is a little of what Seravalli wrote then:
With days left until the NHL draft, the Daily Faceoff has learned that several teams have placed prospect Logan Mailloux on their “Do Not Draft” list, after he was charged in Sweden with taking and distributing an offensive photo without consent during a sexual encounter in consensus at the latest. November.
Several other teams rank Mailloux as a talent in the first round, ranging from as high as the top 15 to 33rd to 72nd on a random selection of draft teams, leaving many wondering when – if at all – an NHL club will choose the London Knights’ defender.
The incident occurred on November 7 in Skellefteå, Sweden, where Mailloux played on loan with SK Lejon in Sweden’s third division while the Ontario Hockey League was shut down due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Mailloux, now 18, was 17 years old and a minor at the time of the incident. As a minor, Mailloux has given the Daily Faceoff permission to publish details of the case – which was not a secret in the hockey world. Although he was not publicly identified until now, Mailloux received crime news in Sweden. He says he was interviewed by 26 NHL teams in the run-up to the Draft and each of them asked him about the incident.
The victim, then an 18-year-old woman, was not a minor at the time of the incident. The Daily Faceoff does not identify victims of sex-related crimes.
According to a 48-page investigation report from Sweden’s Northern Region Police, obtained by the Daily Faceoff, Mailloux secretly photographed the victim without her consent or knowledge while engaging in oral sex.
