stone instead of glass
In Venice, work in sight for the Calatrava Bridge: the Municipality is in fact budgeting a sum to replace the glass decking with stone slabs.
Too dangerous The Calatrava bridge a Venice, the indispensable connection between Piazzale Roma and the station: this reason that could lead the town of Venice to redo the bridge of the Constitution (this is its official name) by replacing the glass with stone steps. In fact, with rain and humidity, and especially with ice in winter, glass becomes very slippery, and the risk of tumbling (with claims for compensation) is very realistic. The refurbishment of the glass panes therefore seems a reality, because the Municipality of Venice has put half a million in the budget for this purpose, even if the positive opinion of the Superintendency of the new project will be required before the realization: it was already spoken in 2008, shortly after the inauguration of the bridge, opened on 11 September of that year, to replace the glass, while the hypothesis arose for the first time in 2017).
In winter the bridge is regularly secured with the risk of falling and it is always very treacherous. This time, however, it seems there are finally the resources to modify the bridge (in the budget, we read in the Corriere della Sera, in fact, the item “Replacement of the Constitution bridge flooring” appears, according to a plan that provides for the use of trachyte instead of glass).
The bridge has generated a lot of controversy, and not just because of its appearance. actually the expected costs amounted to 6.7 million euros, then increased to 11.3 million to which are also added the costs for maintenance (so much so that it was the subject of investigations by the Court of Auditors), but controversy they are also created for access for the disabled, due to the different height of the steps that force you to change the step as you go up or down, the fragility of the glass part (as well as its slips). Now it is therefore hoped that at least the question relating to glass will finally be resolved.
