A major fire broke out in the Salzburg community of Grossarl in the early afternoon of Epiphany. At around 2 p.m. on a hill, an old farmhouse, the rooms of which were rented to guests, was in flames. The alarm level 3 was initially corrected to 4+ in view of the persistent fire and the difficult extinguishing work due to the location and infrastructure.
wish the fire brigades of the communities of Grossarl, St. Johann, Hüttschlag, Schwarzach and Bischofshofen together against the flames rapidly spreading to the floors of the old house. The Altenmarkt and Wagrain fire brigades also rushed to the aid of the 104 emergency services and 16 fire engines who joined forces to fight the major fire. In response to a request from APA, the on-site commander confirmed that due to the scarcity of water and the aggravating altitude, after exhausting an adjacent moat and the internal drinking water reservoir, they had shifted to the procurement of extinguishing water by shuttle service.
The owner and the guests staying in the currently rented rooms were not present at the time of the fire, the surrounding buildings could be saved and the fire would not jump over. There was immense property damage to the private pension itself, due to the acute risk of collapse, the farmhouse was demolished in the afternoon using heavy transport vehicles. An end to the fire fighting operation was not in sight at the time of the APA inquiry; no information on the cause of the fire has yet been published.
