Car sales recover and there is a new leader in Portugal
In 2021, car sales in Portugal rose 1.9%, facing a 2020, the first year of Covid-19, according to data released this Monday by the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP).
In total, in the last 12 months, 180,277 cars were sold in the country. The lack of semiconductors, in the second half of the year, will have hindered the sector’s recovery.
The market still has a long way to go to get closer to the sales it had before the pandemic. The sector still registers 32.7% less new registrations, compared to 2019.
In passenger cars, 146,637 vehicles were registered, an increase of 0.8%, while in light commercial vehicles there was an increase in sales of 4.4%, which is equivalent to 28,790 vehicles.
Heavy goods are also highlighted, with an increase in sales of 21.3%, that is, 4,850 vehicles.
By brands, a Peugeot now leads the way in consumer favorites with 11% more sales, having overtaken Renault, which occupied the spot for two decades, now in second, after a drop of more than 17%.
A Mercedes follows, which maintains the third position, despite having sold 17% less. Close by is a BMW, which grew by more than 7%.
