A package addressed to the police with the label “destroy” in the entrance area of the Salzburg-Gnigl police station triggered a bomb alarm on New Year’s Day. The police arrested a suspect on Sunday.
An officer from the Gnigl police station discovered the suspicious package around 3:30 p.m. in the entrance area and left the area around the inspection rooms. All apartments in the building above the inspection were also evacuated.
An explosives expert from the police examines the 500 gram package, colleagues from the demining service from Vienna conveniently approach at any time and open it with special equipment.
It turned out that the delivery did not contain any explosives or pyrotechnics, so the police continued. The package included a box of chocolates, china coasters and napkin rings.
Suspect admits action
After initial interviews with eyewitnesses, a suspect was arrested at his home address. He was questioned on Sunday. The 49-year-old from Salzburg admitted to having dropped the package before the inspection. He protested that he didn’t want to hurt anyone or cause them to worry. The 49-year-old was charged with dangerous threats.
