Over 3,200 new corona infections on Sunday
3,283 new corona infections in the last 24 hours in Austria were reported on Sunday. The seven-day incidence rose to 234.6 cases per 100,000 population. On Sunday a week ago there were 1,717 new infections. While the total number of hospital patients rose by 31 to 973 people, the number of intensive care patients rose by three people to 325.
Fewer tests, many positive
What was noticeable was the high positive rate of the PCR tests, which, at 1.7, was more than three times as high as the weekly average of 0.5. Of the 220,936 registered rapid PCR and antigen tests, 192,254 were the more meaningful PCR tests. There were just over 280,000 of these tests last Sunday, at that time with a positive rate of 0.6 percent.

As of Sunday there are 32,847 active cases in Austria, an increase of 1,430 in 24 hours. There are currently 973 people in the hospital, 31 fewer than were reported yesterday. 325 people are cared for in intensive care units. That number has since increased by 3 and has decreased by 58 patients in one week. There were three more cases related to Covid-19, a total of 118 patients were registered in the last seven days, and 13,752 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic.
New infections increased slightly
On New Year’s Day, 3,120 vaccinations were carried out, 274 first stitches, 1,380 second stitches and 1,466 third stitches. 70.8 percent of Austrians have valid vaccination protection. The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is highest in Burgenland at 76.3 percent, while Upper Austria continues to bring up the rear with 66.4 percent.

Regarding the vaccination rates by age group, 67.2 percent of the 12 to 24 year olds have a valid vaccination certificate, in the 25 to 34 age group the rate is 71.5 percent and among the 35 to 44 year olds 75, 77.2 Percent of people between 45 and 54 years of age are demonstrably protected against Covid-19 with a certificate, 84.2 percent in the 55 to 64 group. The 65 to 74 year olds have a rate of 87.6 percent, the 75 to 84-year-olds 90.2 percent and the group 85plus 84.7 percent. 6.4 percent is reported for children up to the age of eleven.
High seven-day incidence in Salzburg
The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Tyrol with 422.6, followed by Salzburg, Vienna and Vorarlberg (330.7, 303 and 261.2, respectively). Lower Austria (193.2), Carinthia (181.1), Upper Austria (161), Styria (153.5) and Burgenland (141.9) follow.
