Gonzalo Plata: «The saddest Christmas I’ve had was in Portugal»
Gonzalo Plata spent the Christmas season in Guayaquil, Ecuador, with family and friends. Before returning to Spain, to present himself for the service at Valladolid, the young man at Sport spoke about the difficulties he faced until he made it in the world of football.
“I never received gifts at Christmas, we didn’t have the money for them, but I always liked this time because I was with my family. I never believed in Santa Claus because they said he left presents under the tree, but my tree was always empty”, recalled the 21-year-old player.
In an interview with the newspaper Expreso in Ecuador, Gonzalo Plata was also asked about the saddest Christmas he had ever experienced: “It was what I spent in Portugal, my first year, alone and away from my family.”
The left-hander arrived at Sporting in the 2018/19 season. This season, he was transferred to Real Valladolid and generated controversy when he crashed into a taxi while driving drunk. The taxi driver and the ticket needed hospital assistance.
“My mother advised me not to do that anymore and to think things through. These are situations that can happen to anyone. Sadly, it happened to me, but it won’t happen again. These things cannot be repeated”, emphasizes Gonzalo Plata.
