Christmas in Portugal: more accidents, but less risky behavior on the road

Between 22 and 27 December, there was an inspection and prevention operation on Portuguese roads and, according to the authorities, there were more accidents, more road deaths and more injuries this year compared to the same period in 2020.
According to data shared by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), GNR and PSP, there were 1922 accidents in the Christmas season, which resulted in five deaths, 25 serious injuries and 548 minor injuries.

During the six days of operation and regarding speed, more than two million vehicles were inspected. Of these, 6,483 were traveling at excessive speed, a lower rate than that recorded in the same period in 2020.

Driving under the influence of alcohol continues to be a reality on Portuguese roads, although fewer in number compared to 2020. Of the 26,497 tests carried out by the authorities, 286 drivers had a blood alcohol level higher than the maximum permitted level of 0. 5 g / l.
Until January 2, 2022, the ASNR, GNR, PSP and 70 other entities will continue with the road safety campaign with the objective of lowering accidents at this festive time of the year.
