3 ‘Star’ keys to US success against Switzerland at WJC
The NHL Network will broadcast every game in the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship at Rogers Place in Edmonton and WP Centrium in Red Deer, Alberta.
It includes extensive coverage of the US junior team (1-0-0-0) which was released on Tuesday (4:30 p.m. ET). The USA, who beat Slovakia 3-2 on Sunday, also face Sweden (December 29) and Russia (December 31). The playoff round begins on January 2nd.
Long-time NCAA hockey analyst Dave Starman, who will oversee the broadcasts with Stephen Nelson and Jon Rosen, will give his three keys to victory for the United States prior to each of his games during the 11-day tournament.
“The United States had a lot of possession time in the offensive zone (17:06), generating 42 shots, including 15 shots from A-area, with three goals scored, two power play goals with eight shots, goalkeeper Drew Commesso (Chicago Blackhawks) was great good and defended very well for the most part, “said Starman. “There were a few bad things like losing 2-0 in the third period. You can say they played not to lose, but I think they were up against a good team of skaters, who played with urgency and learned the lesson that the defense must be full time. ” Thing no matter how the score. “
Here are Starman’s 3 keys to US victory over Switzerland:
1. Manage logs
“[Defenseman] Jake Sanderson (Ottawa Senators) is the horse, but the mating of Brock Faber (Los Angeles Kings) and Wyatt Kaiser (Chicago Blackhawks) was really good and they played a lot. Sanderson’s ice age had risen due to the extended power play time (10:24 PM), but the second pair was impressive. They were in action for the power play goal, but that was difficult for anyone to defend. Managing Sanderson’s minutes in a back-to-back situation with seven games coming up in 12 days is a problem. So the more minutes Faber and Kaiser can eat, the better. That being said, and without overlooking Switzerland, this could be a game where the defenders are split 5v5. Assistant coach Steve Miller is in charge of defense and his human resource management is very good. “
2. Outbreaks
“US breakouts, both controlled and broken plays, were good, especially for game two (including losing to Finland in a game before Thursday’s tournament). The outcomes were clear. They took four or five chances out of the Onslaught of clean breakouts and they were pretty good at possession. Building confidence and consistency in this area will pay off as the tournament progresses and in the big games. This is an area where training and skill and skating will be an area focus team makes this an area that will be a strength. The Defense Corps is mobile and attacked the next shift very well. “
3. Confrontations
“Matty Beniers (Seattle Kraken) is their best opponent; he went 9-for-9 [against Slovakia]. Face-offs create possession and wins are important. What I liked was how well they responded to scrambles and lost draws and cover. Logan Cooley (2022 NHL Draft Eligible) showed maturity against some older players in a tie. He continues to make this an area of strength, viz [assistant coach] Kris Mayotte’s area on the bar. It will be an ongoing focus that Mayotte has expertise in. So make sure that the centers continue to focus on the points and the reactions to wins and losses in the duel. “
