Stray cars and swans – strange operations at the Berlin police – BZ Berlin
Chocolate bars, swans and a car in a long jump pit – in addition to criminals, traffic accidents and a wide variety of demonstrations, the Berlin police were also busy with many strange things this year.
The police officers documented some extraordinary incidents on their Twitter channel.
► In November there was a report from a driver who drove his car into the long jump pit of a school in the Westend. According to the police, the man had relied on his GPS. The car had to be dragged out.
► Also in November, a volatile herd of water buffalo devastated several front gardens in Reinickendorf. The six animals were brought back to their enclosure in Hermsdorf.
► In July, the police reported on Facebook about a drunk man who was transporting a refrigerator along the bike path on an e-scooter in Schöneberg. When the police tried to stop the man, the refrigerator fell to the floor.
► In March, the police collected a swan on the 115 federal motorway in Berlin-Nikolassee. The animal was lost there on the road. The police commented on the rescue with the words: “I had a swan again!” In February, a swan was rescued from the ice on the Landwehr Canal with a makeshift lasso.
► In January, the police surely surprised sweets worth 2000 euros in an apartment in Fennpfuhl, including 688 bars of chocolate, 160 packs of hazelnut chocolate balls and 43 bags of pistachios. The thieves were tracked down by the security service of a supermarket in Weißensee.
The Berlin police reported on other unusual missions on October 1st. Under the hashtag Police110, the officers tweeted incoming emergency calls for ten hours. In the reality of traffic accidents and crimes, that was often serious, but occasionally it was also bizarre. “In Lichtenberg a parcel delivery man was pelted with eggs from the fourth floor,” it said.
In total, the police last deployed almost 772,000 missions in 2021 (as of November 18), as the officials announced at the request of the German Press Agency. Almost 85,000 of them were traffic accidents, with more than 28,000 missions in fourth place.
The Berlin fire brigade also reported strange missions upon request:
► In August, a decorative magnifying glass set a sofa on fire. The light from the deeply set sun was focused through the magnifying glass in such a way that it set fire to the couch in a warehouse on Ullsteinstrasse. Several movie props were stored in the hall. The magnifying glass was said to be on a sideboard near a window. The “minimal initial fire” could be eliminated quickly.
► In July, the emergency services rescued an injured crow from a tree in the Rudow district from a height of 20 meters. There the bird got caught in a string and suffered wounds. The animal was taken to a small animal clinic.
