“At the beginning of January, infections will continue to rise, driven by the Omicron variant”
There are two photographs of this Christmas, the second, conditioned by the pandemic. The first comes from the Rimini sick hospital: yesterday morning, during the meeting with some doctors, nurses and operators at work on Christmas Day in the intensive care and prenatal intensive care, oncology and pediatric oncology departments, I was able to touch firsthand the concern for the resurgence of an enemy more hostile than expected, a virus that between mutations and variants in the conditions of putting health facilities under stress. We must be clear, aware that the period that awaits us will be anything but easy to manage: at the beginning of January the infections will continue to rise, driven by the Omicron variant which is also spreading in our country and which will also become predominant in our territory. The first attention must be precisely to the level of saturation of the hospital structures and the overload of work of the health personnel: at the moment the situation is under control and below the warning levels, thanks above all to the vaccination that weakens the effect of the virus and that allow to reduce the number of patients requiring hospitalization. Even in Rimini, however, the occupancy rate of the beds is growing and the data, confirmed yesterday by the health workers themselves, tell us that 80% of those hospitalized in intensive care are patients who have not undergone vaccination. The second image comes from the Rimini vaccination hub. Yesterday, together with the mayor Sadegholvaad, we brought the best wishes and thanks from the city to the operators who, even on Christmas day, put themselves at the service to give an injection of hope for a more peaceful 2022. Women and men to whom we have symbolically given a hyacinth bulb, a resistant plant capable of flowering even in difficult conditions, if only we take care of it. And it was exciting to hear from their words the satisfaction for the response of the Rimini people to the openay organized yesterday, with a turnout higher than expectations. Many people who, before or after Christmas lunch, have decided to protect themselves and those they love; an important message above all from a reality like Rimini, a sign of a growing awareness of our community. A year has passed since that December 27, 2020, the date that marked the start of the national vaccination campaign against Covid 19, in an Italy closed at home and in ‘red’, forced to deal with a bulletin of victims dramatic. Much has changed since then: if today, despite the surge in infections, we are still in a situation of relative normality, we owe it precisely to the immunization campaign. This is why we must prepare ourselves for this delicate beginning of the year with caution, but without getting anxious and everyone doing their part, respecting the rules of behavior and coexistence that we have set ourselves. And, above all, by vaccinating ourselves.
