Coronavirus in Belgium: the number of new infections still declining
The average number of daily coronavirus infections in Belgium continues to decline, according to the latest data from the Sciensano Public Health Institute, published on Thursday.
Between December 13 and 19, 8,153 new Sars-CoV-2 infections were detected on average per day, a decline of 36% compared to the previous week. Since the start of the pandemic in Belgium, more than 2 million cases of coronavirus infection have been diagnosed.
Between December 16 and 22, there were 164 hospital admissions per day due to coronavirus, which is a decrease of 36% from the previous reporting period. In total, 2,321 people are hospitalized in Belgium due to Covid-19 (-26%), including 693 patients treated in intensive care (-14%).
Between December 13 and 19, 36 people died per day on average from the virus (-20%).
Some 73,100 tests on average were also carried out, down 18%.
The virus’ reproduction rate remains below 1, settling at 0.75. When it is less than 1, this indicator means that the epidemic tends to slow down.
The incidence, which indicates the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reached 1,266 over 14 days.
