Harrie Lavreysen chosen as the best cyclist in the Netherlands
Track cyclist Harrie Lavreysen has been named Cyclist of the Year. Lavreysen won gold in the team sprint and the sprint at the Olympics, and won the bronze in the keirin. He then won three more gold medals at the World Cup. “I never expected to win the cycling prize as a track cyclist. I think it’s an honor.” Lavreysen wins the Gerrit Schulte Trophy for the first time.
The track cyclist from Luyksgestel also praised his team. “The team is very important. As a team we could qualify, we knew that for a long time and we trained there to be good in Tokyo.” Lavreysen was preferred over BMX rider Niek Kimmann, who won gold in Tokyo, and Mathieu van de Poel, the winner of the past two years.
The winners were chosen by the former riders gathered in the Club 48, the current riders who are members of the Association of Professional Cyclists. Cycling fans could also vote for the various nominees.
Due to the corona measures, the cycling gala in Den Bosch, where the prizes are traditionally awarded, was canceled this year.
Lavreysen has also been nominated as sportsman of the year together with Niek Kiemmann and Max Verstappen. The announcement will be made on Wednesday evening.
