The White House reaffirmed Ukraine’s right to join NATO
The United States believes that Ukrainian law determines its prospects for NATO membership, as well as the decision of the Allies to expand it, recognizing the foundations of European security.
This was stated at a briefing in Washington by White House anniversary Jen Psaki, Ukrinform’s own correspondent reports.
“The vision of the president and the administration (USA – ed.) Is that the right of sovereign states to choose the path of partnership and alliance in the alliance is a key principle of European security,” Psaki said.
She reminded that the United States had stated this before, and this position remains unchanged.
“We support the desire of countries to join NATO and meet specific requirements. As for NATO’s relations with Ukraine, this issue should be determined only by Ukraine and the 30 Allies, “the White House said.
As reported by Ukrinform, the Russian Ministry on December 17 published an agreement on a draft of the so-called “security guarantees” that Putin demanded from NATO, and as Moscow handed over to Washington. At one point, Russia invites Allies to commit themselves to “excluding further NATO enlargement, including the accession of Ukraine and other nations.”
In addition, Russia suggested that the United States “refrain from conducting any military activities on the territory of Ukraine, as well as the states of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.”
