It’s here luxury street in Toulouse, the one we walk around to lick the windows of high-end retailers.
But it is also one of the streets in the city center where car traffic is very dense and the sidewalks very narrow.
It’s that last face of rue Croix Baragnon that the town hall of Toulouse wants to change.
While an XXL transformation of part of the rue de Metz is looming for 2025, the community has also decided to redevelop rue Croix-Baragnon, des Carmes to Place Saint-Etienne.
The main directions of the project were unveiled at a public meeting on Monday, December 13, 2021.
Less traffic
“The objective is to ensure that this street is appeased. From 260 vehicles that circulate there every hour on average, we want to increase to 50 vehicles per hour ”, indicated a few days ago to Toulouse news, Julie Escudier, mayor of the Center sector of Toulouse.
To reduce traffic and achieve a more attractive layout for pedestrians, the town hall plans to install bollards restricting access to the street.
Reflection on a block of three streets
The redevelopment of rue Croix Baragnon will go hand in hand with that of rue de Metz and rue Boulbonne. It will be done as part of a more comprehensive reflection on the traffic plan in the city center.
“We want to do this as part of a reflection by sector. The idea is not to appease one place to initiate the mess elsewhere. It’s a real game of interweaving which should also make it possible to appease the rue Saint-Antoine du T ”, announces Julie Escudier.
Extension of the area under access control
Clearly, it is an extension of the area under access control, which we know in the hypercentre which is in the pipes and on which the services of Toulouse Métropole and Tisséo are working. Extension which will require changing some directions of traffic.
Remove from parking
As for the redevelopment of the street, it is indeed a requalification in line with rue de Metz and on the model of the installations carried out in Victor-Hugo in recent years, which is imagined for the Croix-Baragnon.
In addition to reducing traffic, the project plans to remove parking, “Except for the two delivery areas and a disabled person’s space”, to improve pedestrian accessibility by widening the sidewalks and showcase heritage, the facade…
The first images
The main axes were presented on Monday. The allocated budget would be in the order of 4.2 million euros and the first images have been shared.
They make it possible to imagine what the street will look like after the works, at the end of 2024, at the beginning of 2025.
The public can still contribute their ideas as part of a consultation that will continue until January 14 on the “I participate” platform of the City of Toulouse.
