+++ 10.12.2021: Prize money for the Four Hills Tournament winners will be increased fivefold +++
The winner of the Four Hills Tournament will in future receive significantly more prize money than before. At the anniversary edition this winter there are 100,000 Swiss francs (around 96,000 euros) for the overall winner of the event in Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen. So far, the prize money for the best touring ski jumper was 20,000 francs, i.e. only a fifth. “It’s great that we can start the 70th tour with a new prize money dimension and that we can reward the tour winner for his terrific performance significantly better than before,” said tour president Peter Kruijer.
He described the increase as a “joint effort by the four organizing committees” in the competition venues and the German and Austrian Ski Associations. If a ski jumper wins all four competitions and all four qualifications, prize money of over 150,000 francs is now possible.
It is still unclear whether and when a Four Hills Tournament will be introduced for women. This year, for the first time, the female ski jumpers have a competition on New Year’s Eve, but still in Ljubno, Slovenia and not in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
+++ December 6th, 2021: Both ski jumping tours in Germany without fans in the stadium +++
The two competitions of the 70th Four Hills Tournament at the German ski jumping locations in Oberstdorf (December 29) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen (January 1, 2022) now have to take part without a spectator due to the tense Corona situation. That is why the organizing committees are “immediately taking back tickets and refunding the full purchase price,” according to a statement published by the tour organizers on Monday.
“Unfortunately, the new ordinance of the Bavarian state government leaves us no leeway. That is a shame, because we had specially developed an excellent protection concept,” said Florian Stern, Managing Director of Skiclub Oberstdorf Veranstaltungs GmbH. “But of course: The jumps of the Four Hills Tournament are definitely a professional sport and this when & from now on will take place without a spectator,” said the person responsible for the opening competition.
The athletes are very disappointed about this. “It is of course very, very unfortunate that we are jumping in front of empty ranks again during the tour. As a Oberstdorf resident, I know how much a full stadium can also push and motivate,” said Karl Geiger (28), who leads the overall World Cup “Augsburger Allgemeine / Allgäuer Zeitung”. “The atmosphere in the full stadiums during the tour is one of the most beautiful days that active players and we coaches can experience during the year. Therefore, it is very unfortunate if the ranks remain empty this year due to the pandemic,” said DSV head coach Stefan Horngacher the leaf.
Should the restrictions in Bavaria relax again in the next three weeks, the organizers want to react quickly. “We don’t expect that at the moment. But we are of course very flexible and could start selling tickets again within a few hours,” said Michael Maurer, chairman of the Partenkirchen ski club and Ok boss of the New Year’s event.
Whether the ski jumping fans also have to stay outside at the other competitions in Innsbruck (January 4th) and Bischofshofen (January 6th) depends on the decision of the government in Austria.
+++ November 26th, 2021: Tour organizers plan with fans – number “completely open” +++
The organizers of the Four Hills Tournament are currently planning with fans at all four ski jumping locations despite the current Corona situation. This is communicated by the organizers. Tour President Peter Kruijer from the Oberstdorf Ski Club said: “Whether this will work and how many fans will actually be allowed into the stadium is currently completely open. That depends on the current development of the corona incidences and the requirements of the authorities in the next weeks. “
The 2G regulation should apply as a minimum requirement from December 28th to January 6th. This means that only those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered are allowed in Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen. In Germany A current test certificate must also be provided. Currently, 25 percent capacity is allowed for sports events in Bavaria. Due to the worsening pandemic situation, Austria is in lockdown until December 13th.
