The fact that the Munich ice hockey heroes are among the top four in Europe is thanks to their outstanding goalie Danny aus den Birken (36), who played in the second leg against the strong Finnish, after the 2-2 in the quarter-final first leg at Lukko Rauma Master parried 19 out of 20 shots – but so did Justin Schütz!
The only 21-year-old dusted off in extra time to make the decisive 2: 1 (63rd minute). Afterwards there was a hilarious celebration! Schütz: “It was brutally good to be able to help the team like this.” Frederik Tiffels had equalized the lead of the Finns (33.) with his goal of the season in the CHL (39.).
In the semifinals, Munich will meet a Finnish team again on January 4th (8:30 p.m.) at home, the 17-time champions Tappara Tampere (second leg January 11th, 6:00 p.m.). The other semi-final is purely Swedish: Rögle Ängelholm against Frölunda Göteborg.
Munich’s successful trainer Don Jackson – typically for him – even wants the title, says: “Everything is possible.”
