the situation is deteriorating in France, status quo in Belgium
The situation has deteriorated in France. It has not improved in Belgium.
ECDC card
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has updated the country color on the “Covid map”. Dark red is more and more present in France compared to last week. No change in Belgium.
Every Thursday, the ECDC met up to date with the color code of the regions of Europe according to different criteria linked to the contagion of the coronavirus.
This week again, red is present in most of Europe.
With us, the situation is not changing: Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels are displayed in dark red.
This means that the whole country has a very high risk of infection (14-day notification rate is over 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). 16,718 new contaminations were detected on average per day between November 29 and December 5.
At our neighbors
Among our neighbors, dark red is still present in Germany as well as in the Netherlands and Luxembourg. In France, the situation has deteriorated over the past week: almost the entire country has turned dark red. Only the regions of the Center Val de Loire, Normandy and Brittany remain red.
Elsewhere in Europe
In the rest of Europe, red is almost everywhere. Even if the situation has deteriorated somewhat in some regions, Italy remains the country most spared. Sicily, Sardinia, Umbria and Puglia are orange. Same situation in Madrid, Cantabria (Spain), Extremadura (Spain) and two Romanian regions.
Finally, there are some improvements on certain islands such as the Azores, the Canaries and Guyana.

ECDC color code: how is it?
It is on the basis of data and criteria from ECDC, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, that a color code is assigned to European countries as well as to the different regions that make them up.
Dark red color code: regions or countries where individuals are at very high risk of infection (14-day notification rate is greater than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
Color code red: regions or countries where individuals are at high risk of infection (14-day notification rate is greater than 75 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the test positivity rate is equal to or greater than 4% OR if the rate 14-day notification range is between 200 and 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
Color code orange: regions or countries where a moderate risk of infection has been identified (the 14-day notification rate is less than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants but the test positivity rate is 4% or more OR if the 14-day notification rate is between 75 and 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the test positivity rate is less than 4%).
Green color code: regions or countries for a low risk of infection has been established (14-day notification rate is less than 50 cases per 100,000 population and test positivity rate less than 4% OR 14-day notification rate is less than 75 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the positivity rate is less than 1%).
Depending on these colors, the Belgian authorities take measures that the Belgians must follow (tests, quarantine, etc.).
Advice from the authorities during the holidays
– If you are in a group, meet outside as much as possible;
– Keep certain distances if you have not yet been vaccinated;
– Limit your contacts to a close group;
– When traveling, respect the health rules that apply in Belgium;
– Avoid finding yourself indoors in large groups at nightclubs and party outside;
– If you have symptoms, keep this notion of being tested via PCR tests;
– Even if they are not perfect, rapid tests can be a solution to reduce the risk of transmission;
– And finally, get vaccinated: it’s the best barrier against the virus.
