Cannes is preparing for the risk of a tsunami
Cannes City Hall strengthens its risk prevention plan tsunamis and marine submersibles. Report by Nathalie Michet.
Warning messages broadcast via megaphones a stone’s throw from the Croisette, diagrams in the streets to indicate to the inhabitants where to take refuge if the sea is threatening … Far from any scenario of a possible disaster film made in Côte d’Azur, these are the very concrete applications of a prevention plan drawn up by the City of Cannes since 2017 to prepare for the worst: the risk of a tsunami.
A serious risk
Of course, when we talk about the risk of a tsunami in our region, we inevitably provoke some mockery. Yet scientists from National Tsunami Warning Center do their best to explain that this is serious. On several occasions in the past, and even in the past, recent earthquakes near the Algerian coast have caused events on the northern shores of the Mediterranean. Even without being spectacular, a rapid rise in sea level can have consequences. It is less height of wave relief, than force of current.
Alert exercises
Regularly, prevention exercises are organized to test the alert system set up in Cannes. The most recent dates back to November 5. It was on the occasion of World Tsunami Awareness Day. An unexpected meeting for some passers-by. Report by Nathalie Michet.
