Arrogant? Müller wants Salzburg in the round of 16 – football
Salzburg move into the round of 16 of the Champions League. Bavaria is waiting there as a possible opponent. Thomas Müller rubs his hands.
1: 0! Salzburg bring Sevilla FC to their knees on the last day of the Champions League and rise to second in the group behind Lille in the round of 16. It is the first time that an Austrian team is in the knockout phase.
How much that is worth is made clear by the following sentence: Austria now has the same number of representatives in the competition as Germany. With FC Bayern, our neighbors only bring the Bundesliga croesus into the round of 16. There can now be a direct duel.
The Munich team with ÖFB star Marcel Sabitzer is one of seven group winners that Salzburg can pull as possible opponents on Monday.
Müller wants to go to Salzburg
That is exactly what Thomas Müller wants. That is what the Bayern star said after the 3-0 win against Barca, which he initiated with his goal. Is he underestimating the Austrian series champion? When asked about it in front of the Sky microphone, Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle is certain: “No. He’s just going to want to take a short trip.”
The success coach is right about that. Because Müller says: “Short distances are always pleasant for us professionals. Not because that would be an easy opponent.”
No arrogance either, pure cosiness! Salzburg has long made a name for itself in Europe.
Cops want to see Rangnick again
The cops themselves would like a different lot. Both Jaissle and sports boss Christoph Freund are eyeing Manchester United. Ex-Red Bull mastermind Ralf Rangnick took over as interim coach there last week.
Jaissle: “That would be a great story. Ralf wished me the best of luck.”
Freund: “Manchester United won the group. It’s a huge club. We have a special relationship with the coach (Rangnick, note). So I want them.”
