This Sunday, the President of the Republic declared himself happy with the Portuguese adhesion to vaccination against covid-19, “without the need for mandatory vaccination”, and stated that he expects the same for children, noting that he is dependent on the health authorities.
“I am happy to know that the vaccination of tens of thousands of Portuguese is planned today and that adherence is so great that there is no question of mandatory vaccination in Portugal. The Portuguese understand that they should be vaccinated without the need for mandatory vaccination “, the head of state to journalists.
Asked if he considers that the same adherence is verified with the vaccination of children, the President of the Republic began by answering that this “is a decision that depends on the ultimate position of the health authorities”.
Then, he referred that in the vaccination “from 12 to 18 years old, after there were several points of view, there was massive adherence”, developing: “This was a good sign. .
Asked if there will be, before Christmas, a new meeting of politicians with specialists in various areas of health on the evolution of covid-19 in Portugal, the President of the Republic once again stressed that the current situation and a year ago “are different situations “, but referred the matter to the Government.
“It is a Government initiative. Let’s see if the Government considers it necessary to listen to specialists,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The General Directorate of Health (DGS) released on Friday the position of a group of experts in pediatrics and child health on the vaccination against covid-19 of children from five to 11 years, recommends that it promised to disclose soon.
In a statement, the DGS said that this evaluation process “is still ongoing”, with the Technical Commission on Vaccination against Covid-19 (CTVC) analyzing the information received from the group of experts in pediatrics and child health and “other documents relevant to the elaboration of the recommendations”.
Among these documents is the technical information that the European Center for Diseases (ECDC) issued on December 1st, in which it supports the vaccination of children between the ages of five and 11, as approved by the European Union regulator.
