In Paris, a cinema set at the service of research
Located at the Institut de la vision, the Streetlab is used by researchers and doctors as well as by manufacturers, from lens manufacturers to automotive equipment.
If it is not at the Institut de la vision, in Paris, it would be very difficult to believe the Streetlab is not a movie set, but well… a place for research! Conceived in 2012 by José-Alain Sahel, founder of the Institut de la vision, this structure is a unique tool used by researchers and doctors as well as by manufacturers, from glass manufacturers to automotive equipment. An “artificial street”, an indoor evolving platform, allows various types of urban environments to be simulated. Further on, a laboratory-apartment crammed with home automation and various simulators (driving, low-vision, etc.) allow the strategies and needs of test participants to be observed.

In the artificial street, “Patients are immersed in an ultra-realistic universe, their interactions with the environment are therefore much more natural than during simulations of tasks on a screen, for example”, notes Angelo Arleo, CNRS research director at the Institut
