Agreement on expansion of container terminal Port of Brussels
The board of directors of the Port of Brussels has given the green light to close the container terminal in the outer port on Friday. 4.2 hectares will be added to the current surface area of 1.67 hectares by moving the container terminal onto the adjacent sites owned by the Port of Brussels.
According to the Port of Brussels, the decision comes at the right time, because the current terminal has reached saturation point and container transport is experiencing continued growth. The expansion is a solution for sustainable container transport from the waterway of the future and to the location by road.
The expansion will triple the current area of the terminal. Also use the capacity from the current 50,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) to 120,000 TEU. The Port of Brussels is investing 6.8 million euros in the project. “With these extensions, the Port of Brussels is carrying out a project that is significant as environmentally friendly,” said Anthony Baert President, Vice President of the Port of Brussels.
The current container terminal came into operation in 2003, but has now reached its saturation point. A call for projects for the expansion of the terminal will be published in the first quarter of 2022. In 2023, the port hopes to conclude a new agreement for the new terminal. “A container terminal that can accommodate the growth and develop related activities is an asset for the region,” said Alain Maron, guardianship minister of the Port of Brussels.
