The Salzburg Festival Board of Trustees knew that the original five-year contract with actress Bettina Hering would be extended to two more years. Hering will then end its function in autumn 2023.

Bettina Hering, born in Zurich in 1960, studied German, philosophy and anthropological psychology. As assistant director at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and at the municipal theaters in Frankfurt am Main, she worked with directors such as Peter Palitzsch, Einar Schleef and Hans-Jürgen Syberberg. Based in Vienna since 1991, she worked as a director and dramaturge, including for the festival “Literatur im Nebel”. From 2012 to 2016 Bettina Hering was the artistic director of the Lower Austria State Theater; since the 2017 season and the directorship of Markus Hinterhäuser, she has directed the drama at the Salzburg Festival.
