Corona numbers: 15,365 new infections on Wednesday
After fewer than 10,000 new infections were reported on Tuesday, it should be clear that this value was only a one-time “outlier downward” and that the fourth corona wave continues to sweep through the country. In Upper Austria alone there were 4,489 new cases, which corresponded to 29.22 percent of all infections.

The situation in hospitals is becoming increasingly critical
More than 3,200 people with Covid-19 are now in the hospital. There are exactly 3,212 people who have to be treated as inpatients. This means that 67 more people need a bed and care in a hospital than the day before. 578 seriously ill Covid cases are cared for in intensive care units. Within a week their number rose by 92 patients and patients. In Upper Austria alone, 699 corona patients were treated on Wednesday, five more than the day before. 123 patients met in the intensive care units. For comparison: In Vienna, where 28 percent more people live, there are currently 473 Covid patients, 110 of them in intensive care units. Vienna recently agreed to take on four Salzburg intensive care patients, where 38 severe Covid cases are currently in need of treatment.
332 visits in a week
66 more visits have been added in the last 24 hours. In the past seven days alone, Corona has killed 332 people. In total, the pandemic has meanwhile claimed 12,180 deaths in Austria. Since the pandemic began, 136.4 people per 100,000 inhabitants have died from or with Covid-19.

Almost 100,000 vaccinations on Tuesday
There was good news from the “vaccination front”. Almost 100,000 vaccinations – exactly 99,966 – were carried out on Tuesday. According to the data in the e-vaccination pass, a total of 6,256,741 people received at least one vaccination, which corresponds to 70.0 percent of the population. 5,904,364 people and thus 66.1 percent of Austrians have valid vaccination protection.

Of the vaccinations on Tuesday, 11,061 were first stitches, 12,164 second stitches and 76,741 third stitches, which was equivalent to 76.77 percent of the vaccinations carried out. A total of 96,979 first vaccinations and 85,013 second stitches were given over the past seven days.

More than 150,000 active cases
As of Wednesday, 151,943 active cases appeared in Austria, 2,491 more than the day before. There have already been 1,095,297 confirmed cases in Austria since the start of the pandemic. 931,174 people have recovered since the outbreak of the epidemic, and 12,808 in the past 24 hours.
Salzburg leads the way in incidence
The current seven-day average for new infections is 14,140 throughout Austria. The seven-day incidence – new infections die in the last seven days per 100,000 inhabitants – has risen to 1,108. With the seven-day incidence, Salzburg (1,795.9) and Upper Austria (1,656.2) are well above the average. Not far from these values are Carinthia (1,435.2), Vorarlberg 1,382.9 and Tyrol (1,339.7). Lower Austria (987.4), Burgenland (759.8), Styria (754.6) and Vienna (625.5) are below the 1,000 mark.

Infections are heading for a new high
As far as the daily new infections are concerned, there has only been once – namely last Friday with 15,809 – more cases within one day than on today’s Wednesday. So far, the 24-hour value of 15,000 has only been exceeded four times. If you look at the individual federal states, the hotspots Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Vienna follow at a significant distance, where worrying numbers were achieved with 2,501 and 2,016 new casualties in the last 24 hours. Styria recorded 1,547 new cases, 1,464 Salzburg, 1,399 Tyrol, 865 Carinthia, 770 Vorarlberg and 314 Burgenland.
As for testing, 621,639 rapid PCR and antigen tests have been reported in the past 24 hours. Of these, 379,970 were meaningful PCR tests. All in all, there are now 136,957,938 corona tests carried out. The positive rate of the PCR tests was four percent. This 24-hour value is above the average of the last week (an average of 2.9 percent of the PCR tests positive).
