Matabiau will get bigger. If the Toulouse station has been the subject of work for several years, that a square has already been created on the side of the historic building, that the tunnel which connects this building to the metro has been renovated, and that the demolition site from the bottom of the avenue de Lyon continues, it is now that the bulk of the work will begin.
While the Bordeaux-Toulouse high-speed line tries to move forward, the 3e The metro line is expected at the end of 2028 with a route that offers three stations in the environment close to the station, reorganizing Matabiau will be the big part of the new phase in which the Grand Matabiau project, Quai d’Oc will be located.
A new entrance for the station
In fact, it is an expansion of the station towards Marengo that will take place with the creation of a multimodal exchange hub that will serve as the new entrance to the station, just opposite the Toulouse Métropole headquarters and the José Cabanis Media Library. The new entry will lead to one of the four future forecourt of the station.
On three levels
The extension of the station in the direction of Marengo, will be carried out through the creation of new tunnels. Tunnels that will lead to the new Marengo entrance. An entrance which will be organized on three levels with the square, a mezzanine “which will offer passenger service areas and technical rooms” at the level of the railways and a room which will allow travelers to reach the car parks and metro counters, the railway platforms and the historic building.
In 2018, SNCF showed what this three-level pole could look like. At the time, it was counting on a partial opening of the pole in 2024 or 2025. Since then, the 3e metro line has been delayed for four years and the pole is expected to open in 2028, concomitantly with the 3rd line.
A new transport hall
Part of the multimodal hub, which will become one of the reactors of the Matabiau / Marengo station, is the subject of D’a public consultation.
Organized by the Occitanie Region, the consultation aims to imagine the functionalities of a future Halle des Transports which will be one of the buildings of the future hub. This consultation started on November 10 and continues until December 10.
This Hall, which will be directly linked to the historic Matabiau station thanks to the extensions of the north and south undergrounds (see map below), must therefore see the light of day by 2028 according to the announced schedule.
“Respond to the increase in the flow of travelers”
The Occitanie Region, which is the bearer of this Halle project, explains:
“It is part of a series of operations (metro, multimodal forecourt, bicycle parking, historic station and underground access to railway platforms), the design and construction of which are coordinated within the framework of the Grand Matabiau, Quais d’Oc project. This major facility, sized to respond to the continuous increase in passenger flows, will enable the Matabiau Gares Center to cope with a tripling of its current attendance by 2030, following the scheduled entry into service of the 3e metro line and the expected arrival of the TGV. “.
New equipment
The Region specifies the project:
“This building will allow known easy movements between the different modes of transport (rail, metro, bus, pedestrian, bicycle, taxis, car parking), position services and equipment related to travel (passenger reception, multimodal information, waiting areas, toilets, etc.) and to set up retail and leisure spaces close to passenger flows ”.
The consultation will have an impact on the project
After closing the consultation, the Occitanie Region will propose a workshop on January 11, 2022 (registration before December 28, 2021 on 05 63 77 66 74), then two days of permanence at the station on February 3 and 4, 2022.
End of February 2022, the results of the consultation in the specifications will be incorporated into the specifications to select the architect who will design the Halle des Transports.
