‘Tehran’ wins International Emmys and Portugal loses to China
AN Soap opera ‘Quer o Destino’, voiced by Plural Entertainment Portugal and broadcast by TVI in 2020, was nominated in the Telenovela category, but lost to the Chinese ‘A Canção da Glória’.
The awards recognizing television programs obtained outside the United States, and which took place in New York, were marked by diversity, with 44 nominees in 11 categories from 24 countries.
One of the signs of diversity had already been given: for the first time in 49 years of the awards, for example, Egypt was among the nominees, thanks to the role of actress Menna Shalay in ‘Every Week Has a Friday’.
An Israeli production, ‘Tehran’, a series revolving around an Israeli intelligence agency Mossad agent infiltrated in Iran, won the Best Drama award, the most coveted of the night.
‘It’s not just about a series of espionage, it’s also about understanding the human behind your enemy,’ said the show’s creator and producer, Dana Eden, after receiving the distinction, revealing that for her the show represents the hope for a future in which ‘the Iranians and the Israelites can, at some point, work together as friends rather than enemies.’
The fourth season of the French show ‘Call My Agent’ was awarded the best comedy in a ceremony that saw the International Emmys return to face-to-face format after the virtual version last year.
The best actress award went to British actress Hayley Squires, star of ‘Adult Material’, while the best actor award also went to David Tennant for his role in ‘Des’.
The most awarded countries were the United Kingdom and France, with three and two distinctions respectively, while the rest were distributed between New Zealand, Thailand, Norway, China and Israel.
The weight that International Emmys are gaining, driven by ‘box-office hits’ on entertainment platforms such as ‘A Casa de Papel’ (Spain) or ‘The Squid Game’ (South Korea), was evident in the presence of the artists who highlighted the prizes.
Among them were British actor Brian Cox, Canadian-American Joshua Jackson and American actress and model Vanessa Williams and Nigerian-British Chiké Okonkwo.
Best Documentary went to ‘Hope Frozen: A Quest to Live Twice’ (Thailand), Best Artistic Show went to ‘Kubrick By Kubrick’ (France), best Unscripted Entertainment Show went to ‘The Masked Singer’ (Kingdom United), and Best Miniseries for ‘Atlantic Crossing’ (Norway).
