Portugal has 120 tourism projects under construction
ANDin Portugal, there are 120 projects under construction, with an estimated total capacity of 14,521 rooms, according to the latest report on hotel construction trends in Europe by Lodging Econometrics (LE), which Notícias ao Minuto had access to. According to the same data, the construction of hotels in Europe closed the 3rd quarter with a total of 1,814 projects, the equivalent of 295,719 rooms, and remained largely unchanged throughout the year.
Currently, there are around 870 projects, representing 144,463 rooms. Even so, this figure reflects a drop of 6% in projects and 5% in rooms, compared to the same period of the previous year. Over the next 12 months, the construction of a further 444 projects is starting, that is, 71,655 rooms. 7% less on projects and 5% on rooms, the report reads.
As for projects in the activation phase, they reached maximum levels in the 3rd quarter, standing at 500 projects / 79,601 rooms, an increase of 15% and 22%, respectively.
According to the same report, the main construction countries for tourist accommodation projects in Europe are the UK with 335 projects / 52,086 rooms, Germany with 271 projects / 48,883 rooms, France with 156 projects / 18,680 rooms, Portugal with 120 projects / 14,521 rooms, and Poland with 86 projects / 12,628 rooms.
As for European cities, those that stand out are London with 86 projects / 15,480 rooms, Dusseldorf with 53 projects / 10,368 rooms, and Paris with 38 projects / 6,238 rooms. Followed by Lisbon with 35 projects / 4,120 rooms and Istanbul with a maximum of 31 projects, representing 6,419 rooms.
Note that the hotel chains with the most units under construction are Accor, first in the table, followed by Marriott, Hilton and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). These four companies represent 46% of the total hotel construction pipeline in Europe, the report highlights.
During the third quarter of 2021, Europe opened another 122 hotels, that is, 18,431 rooms, thus bringing the total number of new hotels availability to 339 hotels, representing 49,880 rooms. The document indicates that LE experts predict 116 more projects with 15,334 rooms to open during the fourth quarter and estimate that 460 new hotels will open accounting for 70,014 rooms in 2022 and 492 new hotels/76,145 rooms to open in 2023.
