There is already a Weather Clock in Portugal. And remember that we have seven years to save ourselves – Climate
The “first climate clock” in Portugal was inaugurated on Wednesday at the building of the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC), an initiative that seeks to raise awareness of the “climate emergency” in which the world lives, was announced.
“The ‘climate clock’ (climate clock)” is a global initiative organized by scientists and activists with the aim of raising awareness of a climate emergency in which we live”, stresses the AAC, in a press release sent to Lusa Agency.
The initiative was led by Molecular JE and jeKnowledge, two junior companies of the University of Coimbra, in partnership with the Associação Académica de Coimbra, which houses the clock in its facilities.
Quoted in the press release, the president of the AAC, João Assunção, highlighted that the installation of the watch in an association “which has always been at the forefront of the greatest social and political changes in the country is a wake-up call for this generation to act with conviction to reverse “the effects of climate change.
The first clock of its kind was installed in New York in September 2020, consisting of a countdown, based on data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, telling how long it takes humanity to reach a point of no return, explained the AAC.
The increase of 1.5 ºC compared to pre-Industrial Revolution values is seen by specialists “as a point of no return, which should be avoided so as not to worsen the weather conditions for future generations”, he points out.
“According to these changes and if we do not reduce the current currents of greenhouse gases, there are only about seven years and 250 days left until the increase of 1.5 ºC is reached”, he stressed.
For the AAC, the watch’s mission is to “raise the entire population’s awareness so they can avoid this climate disaster”.
