Church and businesses in Genoa, Archbishop Tasca: “Let’s walk together for the good of the city”
“Where there are people, with their businesses, there is the church, we are there to walk together for the good of the city”. The Archbishop of Genoa, Marco Tasca, thus summarizes the relationship between the Genoese church and business, which was at the center of the conference organized by UCID at the Palazzo della Meridiana and moderated by Massimo Minella of Republic. A meeting that was an opportunity to retrace, through the voice of some protagonists, the salient stages of the relationship between the Church and the Company in Genoa.
During all the major crises and moments of transformation of the city, the collaboration between the Church and the Company has found as much as possible to maintain the balance between jobs and production efficiency, as well represented by the photo chosen as the cover of the conference, : the historic meeting, organized by Cardinal Giuseppe Siri, between the president of the port, Roberto D’Alessandro, and the consul of the “camalli”, Paride Batini. “When the port was a time bomb ready to explode – recalls Davide Viziano, promoter of the initiative – it was Cardinal Siri who made them sit around a table to sign peace. On the other hand, it was Cardinal Siri who institutionalized the figure of labor chaplains.
“It worries me a lot when everything that supports the world of work today will come to an end. What will we do?” Archbishop Tasca asked himself, answering a question about the questions for the work on the sidelines. “I think this is the most important question – he said – today I don’t have an answer but I invite the authorities to discuss this issue in order to find an adequate answer as soon as possible”.
