After floods – new protection for Hallein
timeline
Exactly four months ago, the Kothbach, which was considered inconspicuous, flooded the city of Hallein (Tennengau). The flood damage amounts to around 10 million euros. A reservoir, wild wood filter and drains directly by the Salzach should prevent something like this from happening again.
There are several housing estates in Hallein directly on the Salzach. The houses are separated from the river by a one-meter high concrete wall and should actually be protected from floods. In mid-July, however, the water masses die down from the other side, from the Dürrnberg, fins. The water backed up through the concrete wall, the area like a bathtub. It is precisely this problem that has now been responded to.
Stangassinger: drains for bathtubs
There is now a drain, says Hallein’s mayor Alexander Stangassinger (SPÖ): “We have recognized the mistakes in flood protection in the past. Back when it was built, it was simply not taken into account that the water could not only come from the Salzach, but also from the hinterland. ”The mayor adds that diversions have now been set up – even more than the state specified. The city of Hallein will bear the costs itself.
Two drainage facilities are already finished, a third is currently under construction. On the Dürrnberg above the city, a reservoir, a gravel trap and wild wood filter are to prevent the Hallein creeks from flooding again. All of these measures cost around 6.3 million euros.
