Christmas market opens on Thursday – salzburg.ORF.at

The Salzburg Christmas market on Residenzplatz and Domplatz will open as scheduled on Thursday. Those responsible are expecting major losses in sales, but none of the stand operators have canceled.
The rules at the Christkindlmarkt are strong this year – it is compulsory to wear a mask and alcohol is prohibited. Access or consumption of food and non-alcoholic beverages as well as the purchase of goods is only possible for vaccinated and convalescent people. Standler therefore fear a drop in sales of 50 to 60 percent.
Rejection discussed, but discarded
But it is at least a safe event, said market chairman Wolfgang Haider: “The mask requirement and the 2G rule as well as various measures such as distance – so that we can become a safe Christmas market. We are and are happy when we can give hope to the population. “
Market until January 1st
But there is no fence, as was still the case on Rupertikirtag. The Christmas market will also be extended for the first time until January 1st – after Christmas they will quickly convert to a New Year’s Eve market, according to Haider. The Christmas market has existed – back then as a pre-Christmas market – since the 17th century.
