Fast 12,000 new infections on Thursday

According to the Ministry of the Interior and Health, 11,975 new coronavirus infections were recorded in Austria on Thursday – a new high. 1,487 new cases were added in the state of Salzburg.

The basic statistical data for Salzburg

  • 8,863 actively infected people
  • 7-day incidence: 1,094.7
  • 171 Covid patients in the hospital, 21 of them in intensive care
  • So far 636 bases
  • All 119 municipalities affected
  • 71,713 infections in total to date
  • Reproduction number 1.22
  • 7-day incidence districts: Lungau (1,973.4), Flachgau (1,437.7), Tennengau (1,275.6), City of Salzburg (939.4), Pongau (887.1) and Pinzgau (632.9).

61.2 percent fully immunized

According to state statistics, 61.2 percent of the total population are fully immunized so far. Only the Tennengau is below 60 percent vaccination rate with 56.5 percent. Furthermore: Flachgau (60.5 percent), City of Salzburg (60.7), Lungau (62.9), Pongau 63.5 and Pinzgau 63.9.

High value for new infections through late reports

“In the past few days there have been problems in the laboratories and therefore a lot of late registrations. That explains the number of new infections of 1,487. But a look at the seven-day incidence also shows that the situation in Salzburg is currently very difficult. 1,095 new infections calculated for 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days is a sad record. Since the beginning of the pandemic, this value has never exceeded 940, last autumn the maximum was 750 ”, says Gernot Filipp, head of the state statistics.

Vaccination coordinator: “No reason to doubt vaccination”

Higher infection numbers than in autumn 2020 and that despite the vaccination – “I understand that this fact is used by many skeptics as an excuse to question the effectiveness of the vaccination. You are wrong. Yes, vaccinated people are also infected. Yes, some of them have to be treated in hospital. The fact is that most vaccinated people are protected from serious illness and death, ”said Rainer Pusch, the country’s vaccination coordinator. The vaccination protection declined over time, which could die shown in past months.

Fewer studies in 2020

“Last autumn we had 132 sights in November and 149 in December. There was a lot of sad news, especially from the senior citizens’ homes. So far this year in November there have been eight increases in their number, and we all wish that this curve did not last because the older population has already received a booster. “

Higher vaccination coverage, fewer new infections

The higher the vaccination coverage for an age group, the lower the incidence. Specifically, this currently means for Salzburg: 15 to 19 year olds currently have a seven-day incidence of 2,019, 10 to 14 year olds 1,837, 20 to 24 year olds 1,654. “We have a value of 550 for over 60-year-olds. That is half the national average,” Filipp continues.
