″ Glória ″ series, the first Portuguese production for Netflix, debuts this Friday
The Portuguese fiction series “Glória”, directed by Tiago Guedes, the first to be localized for Netflix, debuts this Friday on this ‘streaming’ platform.
“Glória” is a ‘thriller’ of espionage and action, set in Portugal in the final years of the Estado Novo dictatorship, and also during the Cold War, being a fictional story based on a context and real facts.
The action is concentrated in the village of Glória do Ribatejo, where for decades an American broadcasting center (RARET) operated for decades, with the objective of transmitting “Western propaganda to the countries of the Eastern Bloc”.
The fictional story stars engineer João Vidal (actor Miguel Nunes), the son of a high-ranking leader of the Estado Novo, recruited by the KGB, the Moscow secret police.

The series features the participation of Victoria Guerra, Afonso Pimentel, Adriano Luz, Carolina Amaral, Joana Ribeiro, Albano Jerónimo, Marcelo Urgeghe, Stephanie Vogt and Jimmy Taenaka, among others.
In an interview with Lusa agency, the creator and screenwriter of the series, Pedro Lopes, stated that “Glória” represents the entry of Portugal “into another level of making fiction” in Portugal.
“We have access to another financial muscle, that there was more time to write, to film, for the art direction to prepare the recovery of the buildings, the decoration, the actors’ rehearsals. When we enter an international market, the difference is in the objects”, he said.
“Glória”, whose first ten-episode season is available on Netflix this Friday, starting at 8:00 am, Portugal time, is a co-production by SPi and RTP. The public television station will also air a series, given an advertisement.
“This project brought an original story, not only for non-Portuguese people, who come to realize the role that Portugal played as a platform in this period of the Cold War; and also for the Portuguese, because RARET, despite being a complex of 200 hectares where 500 people worked, remains a closely guarded secret over all these years, “explained the creator of the series.
Pedro Lopes professional to build from Netflix, operating in Portugal since 2015: “I believe that ‘Glória’ on Netflix, which is the leader in ‘streaming’ with over 293 million subscribers and present in over 190 countries, can bring visibility to Portugal and our industry”.
“Glória” arrives at Netflix at a time when other streaming platforms are also producing and airing the Portuguese series, such as “Auga Seca”, whose second season will also premiere this Friday on HBO Portugal, and “Operation Black Tide”, for an Amazon Prime video.
