The Salzburg “Winter Festival”, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, brings a tried and tested mix of celebrated stars and insider tips from the international circus scene from December 9th to January 8th.
The artistic director David Dimitri promised breathtaking acrobatics, clown-like theater and lots of humor at the program presentation on Thursday. The open-air circus in the Volksgarten is new. Dimitri wants to give local circus artists a platform and at the same time get more people excited about the world of circus and street art.
Australians want to push borders
The Australian circus company Gravity & Other Myths will show their piece “Backbone”. “These are crazy guys who want to achieve something new with their bodies. They see if they can push the boundaries, ”says Dimitri. It is also about measuring each other, about a humorous competition. The acrobats had started very small and would play in front of sold out houses today.
Some events at Szene Salzburg
Because the Volksgarten has been redesigned in recent months, there is only room for the big circus tent and the red and blue foyer tent. That is why an additional venue was sought – and found with the Salzburg scene. There, for example, Cirque Barcode from Canada will perform with their piece “Sweat & Ink”. The two women and two men use acrobatics, juggling and humor to trace the memory and the question of what happens if you don’t remember, emphasizes Dimitri.
“Joy in the Burlesque Theater”
As his “insider tip”, the artistic director is the name of the two young circus artists from Circoncentrique. “Everything turns, it’s extremely innovative and very unique,” Dimitri describes his impressions. The Wakouwa Teatro stands for fine humor with “Very Little Circus”. “It’s very fine, very poetic and touching,” said Dimitri about the two-person piece, which takes you into the world of clowning with very few props. The Belgian actor Jos Houben deals with the phenomenon of laughter in “The Art of Laughter”. You can feel the joy of burlesque theater, said Dimitri.
Which CoV rules?
