San Marino. The Italian Senate resolves the license plate chaos
The turning point came yesterday; with the approval, by the Italian Senate, of an amendment that introduces changes to the Highway Code.
The most important one concerns the San Marino companies; it is envisaged that it will no longer be forbidden for employees or collaborators – residing in Italy for over 60 days – to drive vehicles registered in the Republic and available to companies on Italian territory. And then a provision concerning private citizens. In fact, the cross-border circulation of vehicles with San Marino number plates driven by people residing in Italy is permitted; as long as the owner of the vehicle is on board.
For the definitive adoption of the provision it will be necessary to move to the Chamber of Deputies and to be published in the Official Gazette. The San Marino citizens will be promptly informed.
The derogation approved at Palazzo Madama falls within the scope of European law, as explained by the speaker: the President of the EU Policies Commission of the Senate. “We found an agreement – says Dario Stefano – which held together the position of the Ministry of the Interior, Foreign Affairs and the Commission”; with the aim of “removing an obstacle that created many problems”. The derogation – he adds – was intended “only for the Republic of San Marino, and not for other similar situations, as some community groups had asked us”. “The Ambassador of the Titan has spent a lot of money on this” – concludes Stefano – “with whom I had several interlocutors to find a point of understanding”.
