New museum district in Lausanne – where the Romands are jealous of the German-speaking Swiss for once
Where the Romands are jealous of the German-speaking Swiss for once
The best art museums in the country are quickly without exception in German-speaking Switzerland. This annoys art-loving French-speaking countries a lot. The new Lausanne museum district helps – but only a little.
The architect raves about “a floating stone” and the client about “a connection between heaven and earth”. In front of hundreds of guests, the Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus and the Vaudois building and finance director Pascal Broulis (FDP) opened the new Museum of Photography and Design in Lausanne on Thursday. It costs 100 million francs. Vaud promises that the museum will not only attract visitors because of itsS. contentsS., but also because of its outstanding architecture.
This means that the new Plateforme 10 museum district next to the Lausanne train station has one prestige building. In 2019, Vaud opened an art museum costing 84 million francs. And it continues with openings. A botanical show garden will be completed in summer. In 2026, a third and final museum is to be inaugurated in the museum district with an art hall, which will also have artist studios.
