Almost 100,000 euros for eight new bicycle projects in Brussels
New bicycle parkings in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Ixelles, Anderlecht, Etterbeek, Schaerbeek, Uccle and Brussels: eight projects of construction, associations and schools in the Brussels-Capital Region supported by the Bikes Fund in Brussels, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation. The call is ongoing: new ones for a better cycling infrastructure in the Brussels-Capital Region can submit at any time.
Giving more people the opportunity to opt for the bicycle as the means of getting around safely and efficiently in and to the Brussels-Capital Region. The Bikes Fund in Brussels has been trying to achieve this for three years now with the support of small, large and large associations, development of public and public private partners, who want to improve the cycling infrastructure or equipment in the capital.
Eight new projects
The Fiets in Brussel Fund has just selected eight more projects for bicycle parking in seven Brussels municipalities for a total amount of 94,235 euros. This brings the number of bicycle projects in Brussels that have received support from the Fund since its inception in 2018 at the King Baudouin Foundation to 53, for a total of more than four million euros.
These are the eight new laureates receiving support from the Fund:
- In Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, the municipality has installed five boxes with 25 places to safely park bicycles in five streets, spread over its territory. With these areas of application, it meets the high demand in these neighborhoods and encourages the use of bicycles in the municipality.
- Also in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, the Haute École EPHEC is setting up a bicycle parking for visitors. It is just one of the Haute Ecole’s training programs to promote bicycle mobility among staff, students and visitors, as part of an action plan developed by the university college with the support of Brussels Environment (Bike Project 2021).
- In Ixelles, the DAK bicycle parking solution makes the link between garage owners who want to rent out this space and cyclists who want to park their two-wheeler safely near their home. With the support of the Fund, ROOF is rusting out the garages in various municipalities. They thus provide 500 places for bicycles.
- Le Creb, which opened a new day center in Anderlecht for children with a severe handicap, will install a covered parking for 16 bicycles designed by children and their families. This installation past in the green policy of the association, which she started with the new passive building.
- In Etterbeek, the Lutgardis School is expanding its cycling infrastructure with a covered parking for 70 bicycles, which are thus sheltered in bad weather. The initiative, an idea of the committee, aims to provide a solution for the development of the two-wheeler and encourage teachers, parents and children even more to come to school by bicycle.
- In Schaerbeek, Center Hama 1, a facility for people with a mental disability, is setting up covered bicycle parking for employees and visitors’ bicycles. With the support of the Fund, there will also be a box for the tandem that the association wants to purchase for its residents.
- In Uccle, the Decroly School provides parking for 42 bicycles for pupils, parents and teachers, together with a bicycle repair workshop. This initiative is part of the active pedagogy of the school, which organizes activities around cycling and encourages the use of the bicycle as a means of transport.
- In Brussels, the Université Saint-Louis is installing 13 new staples in its 26-space bicycle parking. It is just one of the actions in its action plan to promote the use of bicycles by staff and students; The university developed this plan with the support of the Brussels Environment (Cycling Project 2021).
