Do you have at least two free hours and want to help? Note that the different antennas of Seine-Maritime of the food Bank are looking for “volunteers for a day” to position themselves at the entrance to stores, during the big collect national event that will take place on November 26 and 27, 2021.
“Ideally, over two days, between 9 am and 6 pm, we need 500 to 700 volunteers to cover the fifty stores in the Haven and the surrounding cantons, ranging from Saint-Valery-en-Caux to Port-Jérôme-sur-Seine ”, underlines Jean Treger, communication manager of the Food Bank of Le Havre. Good news: the students of the École nationale supérieure maritime and the Jules-Le-Cesne high school in the Océane city are in the process of organizing teams to join the association’s “orange vests”.
30 to 40 tonnes retained in 2020
If collections from individuals represent only a small portion of those distributed, they are nevertheless very important for the Food Bank. “The main donations from large industrial groups. We collect it from supermarkets which give us consumable products, and Europe. Collections are the only times when we can be in contact with beneficiaries and donor clients, ”explains Jean Treger.
All the recipients are then redistributed to those who need them. “We help 23,300 people locally, in partnership with 41 associations,” adds the volunteer from Le Havre.
“Food banks that have existed for more than 35 years to come to the aid of the most disadvantaged who, in France, represent 9 million people living under the poverty line according to INSEE”, adds the association, whose objective is to collect 100 tons of edible. An objective that has become even more difficult since 2020 and the start of the health crisis. Last year, 30 to 40 tonnes of goods were offered by customers of stores in Le Havre and its greater region.
