India-Sweden Healthcare Innovation Center in collaboration with AstraZeneca India launches upgrade program for nurses, Health News, ET HealthWorld
The program, launched by the HIC Center in collaboration with the Office of the Trade Commissioner, AIIMS New Delhi and AIIMS Jodhpur, will begin with the training of 30 AIIMS Jodhpur nurses over two days.
The capacity program aims to develop 5,000 nurses across the country in the coming year by converting the current modules to e-learning. The program also aims to expand the current curriculum for the treatment and management of other NCDs including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and oncology. The modules have been designed to enable nurses to provide specialized care, necessary support services and standardized counseling to patients living with these high incidences of NCD in India.
India-Sweden HIC was established to work with the challenges of health care in the country through technology, protocols, process and competence building. The Innovation Center receives strategic guidance from the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Swedish Government’s Ministry of Health and Social Affairs and the Swedish Embassy in India, with AstraZeneca and NASSCOM as knowledge partners.
Cecilia Oskarsson, Sweden’s Trade Commissioner in India, spoke about the program’s motive for educating the nurses who provide the necessary health care, “Nurses have a transformative power when it comes to managing all diseases. The program we are launching focuses deeply on enriching our nurses with the practical knowledge and specific skills required to practice and promote up-to-date patient-centered care”
According to the WHO, 1 in 4 Indians are at risk of dying from a non-communicable disease before reaching the age of 70. As regards the worrying statistics, the program will provide learning resources within the NCD domain in accordance with the guidelines of the National Program for the Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (NPCDCS).
The training program will aim to enable nurses to better recognize risk factors, causes, pathophysiology, screening methods, diagnostic tests and management of diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and other NCDs. Recipients will also be able to advise patients and society on the importance of early and regular screening and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. Another important result that is expected is to help people overcome myths and barriers and improve the pace of rapid action for confirmatory diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Finally, it will aim to get quick referrals of complicated cases for special care and help society at large to follow treatment in accordance with the standard protocols.

The initiative will be run under the chairmanship of an advisory committee chaired by Prof Suresh K Sharma, Professor and Rector, College of Nursing, AIIMS, Jodhpur. The Advisory Committee is composed of key dignitaries from AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Jodhpur, Directorate-General for Health Services (DGHS), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), AstraZeneca India and Business Sweden. be responsible for describing and reviewing the entire scheme of interventions, which governs the overall framework, planning and implementation of the initiative on the spot, continuous evaluation of the project and development of a model for possible replication across the country.
