You have to be the favorite – as almost always when Red Bull Salzburg meets an Austrian club – also in the run-up to the ÖFB Cup round of 16 against St. Polten don’t lose too many words. Especially since Lower Austrians only died in the second division after relegation last season and are currently only in eleventh place in this. The fact that head coach Mattthias Jaissle warned of the upcoming opponent (“Such a knockout game always carries a risk”) was just as likely to be expected as Karim Adeyemi’s departure in the coming summer.
On the other hand, it was not to be expected that Salzburg would not have to suffer any defeat in the 2021/22 season until October 27th. While the two cup successes against Hertha Wels and Kalsdorf were still mandatory victories, the results in the league and in the Champions League are at least a small surprise in view of the coach change in the summer. Only twice – against Altach and Sevilla – the Bulls could not win, in the 17 other competitive games Salzburg always had the better end for themselves.
Hard to stop Salzburg in the Cup
But against St. Pölten another impressive series is to be extended on Wednesday (7 p.m.). Since the 2013/14 season, the people of Mozartstadt have played all sorts of games in the Cup, the last defeat before the final to date was confirmed on March 7, 2013 against Pasching. Since then, Salzburg has won the Austrian Cup seven times, only Sturm Graz was able to break through the dominance of the bulls in the 2017/18 season.
The Austrian series champions have decided a total of 49 games for themselves since the semi-final defeat against Pasching, and Jaissle and Co. now want to follow up with the 50th coup against St. Pölten. That is also Luka Sucic’s new goal: “We want to win the game and advance to the next round of the Cup. On paper we are the clear favorites, but we still have to approach the whole thing with 100 percent. Then I am sure, that we get through. Our team really wants to get to the cup final, we’re really excited about it. ”
