Ireland against Sweden: Spirited Ireland falls to defeat against the Swedes
Ireland suffered a defeat against Sweden in their World Cup qualifier.
Ireland suffered a defeat in their opening World Cup qualifier against Sweden in front of a capacity audience of 4,000 supporters at Tallaght Stadium.
Louise Quinn’s own goal was the difference between the teams as Ireland failed enough problems with the guests’ goals – mainly in part of the Swedish class at night.
It may not have been a vintage that the Swedes showed at all, but they kept Ireland at arm’s length throughout the competition in Dublin 24,
Ireland defeated by Sweden in Tallaght.
Girls in Green lined up in a 3-5-2 when they tried early to stop the flow of Swedish attacks, even if it had the desired effect.
The Swedes, led by Stina Blackstenius, caused Ireland several early problems, but Courtney Brosnan was more than equal to the challenge from the Swedish striker.
Blackstenius cut inside after a mistake by Niamh Fahey to shoot at Brosnan, before Katie McCabe then went close himself with a long shot on goal that went outside.
Filippa Angeldal then stuck her palms on Brosnan again – but she was able to parry the ball away from danger.
But as Ireland seemed to take the zero into the half-time break, they were undone by the Swedes after an unfortunate deflection.

Ireland against Sweden: Pauws Ireland made of stylish Sweden.
Blackstenius cut the inside before releasing a shot on goal, before it was then deflected into the net from Louise Quinn’s boot.
However, Ireland reacted well to falling behind at the break and gathered early in the second half, with Lucy Quinn shooting outside after a free kick from Megan Connolly floated into the box.
Sweden, however, remained a threat throughout Ireland’s purple patch during the match, where Brosnan denied Fridolina Rolfo with a fine save from inside the penalty area.
Ireland, however, rallied at the death toll, but they could not create a remarkable opportunity late as they sank to another competitive defeat with a crisis clashing against Finland in anticipation.
