A new school combines digital courses and workshops to reintegrate out-of-school youth in Avignon
A school that aims to reintegrating young people who have dropped out of school into the world of work opened for a long time in the city center of Avignon, in the rue du passage de l’Oratoire. Eight young people, apprenticeships aged 15 to 21, returned to this digital learning space in September. The training offers courses in French, history and mathematics. Those theorical class are allied with audiovisual workshops in a brand new radio studio and TV studio.
A springboard for out-of-school youth
“Not all young people find their place in traditional systems. The training we offer makes it possible to mobilize these young people and include them in a concrete pragmatic project“ explains the director of this new school, Fouziya Limoan. Projects are carried out for five to seven weeks in order to create sound or video productions.
It is this practical side of the training that appeals to students, like Ben * who left school before obtaining his baccalaureate. It’s a real springboard for him : “We are not all the time in front of a board or a notebook and it is a good outcome for those who are a little lost. And it can allow them to discover new professions”.
Relearn some rules
The pupils are young people who have dropped out of school or who have had problems with the law. So we have to teach them some rules to return to school or the world of work afterwards. For this, they are supervised by Bérenger Fréhaut, an educator of the judicial protection of young people in Avignon. For example, “you have to arrive on time. So if a young person is not there at 9 am sharp, at 9:05 am we call him to remind him that he is late and tell him that tomorrow we don’t want him to be late” u “at noon is to get rid of the table and do the dishes”.
In the teaching team, there is also a teacher specializing in National Education, a teacher in the legal protection of young people, a team of audiovisual technicians and a trainer from the Volt association.
