Client award given in Austria / Beyond Vienna – Architecture and Architects – News / Messages / News
Six awards and four of them are in the provinces: this year’s ZV-Bauherrenpreis, which was recently awarded in Innsbruck and annually honors particularly good cooperation between builders and architects in Austria, this time draws attention outside the big city tables Centers. This includes a new school building in a town with structural problems, a village chapel that was made by an association of only twelve people, and a lift to a rocky hill in Steyr, which has been under consideration for a hundred years but could only be implemented in 2019. And also the excellent one VinziVillage from Vienna is not a representative object, but a residential village for formerly homeless people that has emerged from voluntary work.
With this selection from a total of 24 nominated projects, the three main judges show Peter Riepl (Architect, Linz), Roger Riewe (Architect, Graz) and Angelika Schnell (Professor of Architectural Theory and Architectural History, Vienna) that excellent building culture can also be found in smaller, cooperative areas and where you do not always expect it. On October 15, 2021, the jury announced the following six winners of the ZV-Bauherrenpreis 2021:

The building owner’s award of the Austrian Central Association of Architects has recognized excellent buildings, open space designs and urban development solutions from the past three years every year since 1967 (only the last year field was canceled due to the corona pandemic). Most of the 300 or so buildings that have been awarded so far belong to the history of the canon of recent Austrian architecture. According to juror Angelika Schell, this year’s awards also show that Austrian builders and architects are apparently resistant to nostalgic appropriation. (sj)
