Better to die in Geneva than appear in court in Moscow
Ex-banker Oleg Zhigayev was staying in Switzerland because Russia is looking for him on charges of embezzlement. He is now on a hunger strike to prevent his deportation.
Returning to Russia would be his death sentence, believes Oleg Schigajew: That is why he would rather die in his adopted country of Switzerland. The former bank was staying in Geneva on September 13th because Russia is looking for him for alleged embezzlement of around 50 million Swiss francs. Zhigayev denies the allegations, but the federal court in Lausanne has confirmed the deportation.
As a result, the 58-year-old Russian went on a hunger strike on the day of his arrest. Since then, according to his lawyer, he has lost over 20 kilograms. His condition is getting worse every day. Zhigayev has signed an advance directive to prevent him from being force-fed.
