Munich virologist warns: “Corona numbers will increase significantly” | Regional
Munich – The rise in corona infections, which is expected to be mild this autumn, is expected to “accelerate significantly” over the next few months. This is forecast by Oliver Keppler, head of virology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.
In the coming months, one must assume that the infection rate will worsen significantly, the scientists on request. However, Keppler considers the coincidence of a fourth corona wave feared by some experts to be unlikely.
With regard to Corona, the Munich Ministry of Health says: “If the vaccination rate is not high enough, we cannot rule out an exponential growth in the number of cases.”
In 2020 there was the second corona wave in autumn with rapid growth in the number of cases, which is why the federal and state governments then imposed the second lockdown.
Contrary to some fears, according to Keppler, Germany is not facing a major flu epidemic at the same time. “I don’t expect a severe flu season,” said the scientist.
“The flu moves alternately from the southern to the northern hemisphere and back again” – always in the respective winter half-year. I hardly gave each other in the southern hemisphere. “
